Oven would not maintain temperature
Gas was turned off! Valve control cover was removed. Inlet fiting to valve was disconnected. Wires were removed from valve. Valve attachment assembly was removed. Old valve swapped out for new on attachment bracket. New attachment assembly affixed into oven. Wires connected. Valve control cover assembled. Gas turned back on and tested. Voila - cornbread the next morning!

Can this be the cause of a slight gas smell when the oven is off? The smell goes away when the gas is shut off to the oven.

Hello Henry,
Thanks for your question. The flat-style oven igniter is almost certainly the cause for this problem. Be very careful since if the gas has leaked from anywhere in the appliance, open flames would be hazardous. We would recommend getting a licensed technician to examine the unit to provide a second opinion after replacing the igniter.
